OUR SERVICES / ETON PERMITS

Permits in
the right system.

Permit and notice coordination through the applicable authority system, including EToN or Street Manager where required.

Works on the public highway in England go through Street Manager. Some authorities and works promoters still use EToN, and Scotland and Wales have their own arrangements. The system matters less than getting the category, dates and conditions right.

What we handle

  • Permit applications and notices for new works, with the correct works category: major, standard, minor or immediate.
  • Notice periods, including the advance notice required for major works.
  • Permit conditions, and what they mean for your traffic management and working hours.
  • Variations when dates move or the works extend.
  • Works start, stop and registration notices so the permit is closed cleanly.
  • Lane rental and other scheme-specific requirements where they apply.

Permit categories

Permit categories are set by the length of the works and the authority’s scheme. Longer works need more notice. The thresholds vary by authority, which is why we confirm them for each job rather than quoting a general rule.

Permit schemes are set by each authority and change. We confirm the current requirements with the authority before every application.

How it works

You tell us the works, the location and the dates. We confirm the category and notice period, prepare the application with the traffic management drawing attached, submit it and manage it through to completion. Where the works are done by a utility or statutory undertaker, we work alongside their own permit team.

ETON PERMITS FAQS

questions.

Speak to Vanguard.

What is the difference between a permit and a notice?

Under a permit scheme the authority must grant permission before the works start. Under a notice scheme the promoter notifies the authority and can proceed unless the authority objects. Most of England now runs permit schemes.

Who can apply for a street works permit?

Works promoters: utilities and statutory undertakers, highway authorities, and contractors or organisations with the right to work in the highway. We will confirm the correct route for your works.

Can you handle an immediate or emergency permit?

Yes. Immediate works have their own notice rules. Call us and we will deal with it the same day.

Requirements vary by location and scope. Contact us to discuss the requirements for your project.
